Morang —Police have arrested two individuals on charges of circulating counterfeit Nepali currency in Rangeli Municipality–2, Betauna, Morang.

The arrested individuals have been identified as 45-year-old Sahamad Husein and 43-year-old Mahendra Mehta.

According to police, Husein used a fake NPR 1,000 note on the evening of Magh 13 while purchasing a Red Bull at a distillery shop in Betauna. He later attempted to repay credit at a grocery shop owned by Ujjwal Dhakal using another counterfeit NPR 1,000 note. After noticing that the note appeared suspicious and paper-like, the shopkeepers informed the police.

Morang Deputy Superintendent of Police Harinandhan Chaudhary said that during preliminary investigation, five additional counterfeit notes were recovered from beneath the seat of a City Safari vehicle (Province 1–01–004 H 0637) used by Husein.

Based on Husein’s statement, police conducted a search at the residence of Mahendra Mehta in Rangeli–2, Kamaljhoda, where more counterfeit notes were seized.

A total of fake Nepali currency worth NPR 9,000 has been recovered from the possession of both individuals. Further investigation into the case is being carried out by the Area Police Office, Rangeli, DSP Chaudhary confirmed.

Police have noted a recent rise in incidents involving counterfeit currency in the border district of Morang. Earlier, police dismantled a fake currency network in Kathmandu linked to cross-border operations involving Nepal and India.
